Twenty-six TrailBlazers, including some new faces, and one canine under the command of Captain Linda headed up to Lake Fort Smith State Park on a warm afternoon to hike the Boston Mountain Trail.  This is a new trail not only for the park but also for the club. The trailhead is just to the right of the entrance to the parking lot.

We started out and found the trail to be easy to hike because it is fairly wide, it does not have lots of rocks underfoot, and it isn’t cluttered with the nemesis of greenbrier.  The trail constantly winds and loops around in a serpentine pattern.  This is leaf off season so there was not much color except for some ferns and moss.  Sharon did spot a tiny flower but Yours Truly was not nearby when she saw it.  A couple of our hikers decided not to hike the whole trail.  Yours Truly is keeping mum to protect the guilty since she had considered doing the same thing!

This trail is marked with blue blazes but at some point we must have gotten off course causing Becky to ask where in the blue blazes are we, but we got back on track and all was well!  En route we saw several mountain bikers.  Meanwhile, some of our hikers of the male persuasion, namely Steve, Jeff and TJ, chose to amuse themselves by throwing rocks at trees.  Inside every grown man lurks a little boy, but in TJ’s case he is a little boy so no one was lurking inside him!

This trail is not near the lake and does not have the big boulders and remnants of early settlers such as the old chimneys that we have see on other hikes at this park.  It will probably be prettier in the spring and fall.  In any case, it was a good day to get up, get out and explore Arkansas – hm, where have we heard that before?

Next week the hike is at Petit Jean.  Sign up on the site if you plan to go.
