Twenty-four TrailBlazers headed out to the Ozark Highland Trail with the intention of hiking from FR1547 to Big Piney Trailhead past Haw Creek campground.  But, despite much searching and discussion as we drove along FR 1547, we never found where the trail crosses the road.  So, we hatched an alternate plan.

We drove to Big Piney Trailhead and hiked back on the OHT through Haw Creek Campground, across the highway and up the mountain until we came to a creek.  It was noon and a fine spot for lunch. After lunch we backtracked through Haw Creek Campground to the trailhead.  One advantage to doing it this way, we did not have to spend any time shuttling cars.

The scenery along Haw Creek was very spectacular with huge boulders and bluff lines along the trail.  There was some water running at the falls area where it is always a pleasant stop.  As we hiked we encountered a beautiful basset hound and he joined the hike.  Many shared their lunches with him and he seemed very grateful.  On the way back he stopped and stayed at the same spot we had found him, so that left us puzzled about why he did not continue following us to the trailhead.  Several got a phone number from his collar so hopefully the owner will be contacted and will go pick him up.

Some hikers went to Pam’s Grotto and made the climb up to the giant rock area while others headed on home.  It was a very nice day in the woods with a great group of TrailBlazers.
